Shape & Size

The Attack Shark R2 measures 117.6 x 61.8 x 38.9 mm, classifying it as a very small mouse ideally suited for fingertip grip users. With my hand size of 20.5 x 10.5 cm, I found that fingertip gripping was the most comfortable way to use this mouse. Claw gripping is feasible but requires a more aggressive hold, while palm gripping was not practical for my hand size, although it may accommodate those with smaller hands.

Despite its compact length, the mouse has a notable height of 38.9 mm, which provides substantial palm support, making it more versatile for claw grip users than other small mice that tend to be lower in profile. The hump is positioned towards the back, enhancing its ergonomics for claw gripping.

Additionally, the sides of the mouse feature a slight front flare and significant inward curvature at the grip point, contributing to its slim profile. This design detail aids in maintaining a secure grip, essential for precise movements during gaming.

Coating & Grip-tape

The Attack Shark R2, similar to the R3, features a magnesium shell without any specialized coating. While the bare magnesium does not offer extensive grip, the mouse's smaller size, inward curvature, and lightweight make it relatively easy to handle. For those who require additional grip, the R2 comes with grip tape for the main buttons and sides. This tape is comparable to standard grip tapes included with many mice, though it may feel slightly less tacky than some users might expect.

Build Quality

The Attack Shark R2 exhibits excellent build quality. The top and sides of the mouse are impressively sturdy, showing no signs of flexing or creaking even under significant pressure. Unlike many mice that tend to have some flex on the bottom, the R2 maintains its rigidity throughout, reinforcing its solid construction and enhancing its durability.

Weight & Feet/Skates

The Attack Shark R2 is exceptionally light, weighing just 45 grams, a feat accomplished through its magnesium shell, strategic cutouts, and compact size. The combination of its low weight, small stature, and side curvatures significantly enhances maneuverability, making the mouse easy to lift and reposition quickly. However, one compromise in achieving this weight reduction is the inclusion of side cutouts, which may not appeal to everyone. For those who prefer a more solid feel, the included side grips can be applied to cover these cutouts effectively, offering a more traditional side surface.

The feet of the previous model, the Attack Shark R3, left something to be desired, raising concerns about the quality of the skates on the R2. Fortunately, the feet on the Attack Shark R2 are a significant improvement, offering complete smoothness right from the start.

Buttons & Scroll Wheel

The main buttons on the Attack Shark R2 are equipped with Omron Optical switches, which are surprisingly tactile, challenging the feel of many mechanical switches based on my experience. Both pre-travel and post-travel are virtually absent, and there is no noticeable side wobble, enhancing the precision and responsiveness of each click.

The side buttons maintain this high standard of tactility and are also free from side wobble. They exhibit minimal pre-travel and only a slight amount of post-travel, which is not discernible during regular gameplay.

The scroll wheel offers a medium level of tactility and scrolls smoothly, making it easy to use. The actuation force required to click the scroll wheel is slightly higher than average, providing a satisfying and deliberate response when pressed.

Sensor & Performance

The Attack Shark R2 is equipped with the new PAW3950 sensor, delivering flawless performance, consistent with other mice that utilize this high-end sensor. The device supports an 8000Hz polling rate using the included receiver, eliminating the need for purchasing an additional dongle. This high polling rate proved to be stable across all games I tested that support enhanced polling rates, ensuring smooth and responsive gameplay without any lag.

Conclusion

The Attack Shark R2 is now available for pre-order at $102.55 (10% off with code ELO). I'm thoroughly impressed with this mouse. It's exceptionally small and lightweight yet boasts a robust build quality, making it perfect for users who prefer a fingertip grip. While those with very large hands may find it too small, it remains a solid choice for most users. Additionally, it accommodates a claw grip well for those with medium or small hands. This combination of features makes the Attack Shark R2 a compelling option in the compact mouse category.
